Academic departments and our office work with 学者s from around 的 world who are 有兴趣在博天堂官方从事研究和其他学术活动. 之前 to 的 US, Scholars must be nominated by an Academic Department at UNC, apply, show sufficient financial funding, and receive a DS-2019 in order to apply for a J-1 visa. 学者和学术部门应完成 托管部门协议 一起提交给全球参与办公室审查. 的 提名学者需要填写的申请表 在Slate杂志上.

Its worth noting if 的 honorarium is offered and arrangements are being made in advance, 的 visitor intending to use 的 Visa Waiver Program should seek 的 Business classification. 的re’s also a 30% withholding required on honorarium payments and incidental expenses (unless 的 visitor claims a tax treaty benefit, which requires having an SSN or ITIN ，或者在这里申请一段时间).

Section 431 of 的 American Competitiveness and Workforce Improvement Act - ACWIA amended 的 Immigration and Nationality act 8 USC 1182(q) as follows: "(q) Any alien admitted under section 101(a)(15)(B) [B visa or equivalent visa waiver] may accept an honorarium payment and associated incidental expenses for a usual academic activity or activities (lasting not longer than 9 days at any single institution), if such payment is offered by an institution or organization described in subsection (p)(1) and is made for services conducted for 的 benefit of that institution or entity, and if 的 alien has not accepted such payment or expenses from more than 5 institutions 或过去6个月期间的组织."
